Coffee in the making
The very first thing to do to enjoy coffee is to plant it. To begin with, there are two popular and most grown coffee species, Arabica and Robusta. The Arabica coffee species are best planted in the land with an altitude of above 1000 or more meters above sea level with 5-6.5 pH acidity level, while robusta is best planted in the land that around 400-800 meters above sea level with 4.5-6.5 pH acidity level. Make sure you plant the coffee seed in an area that receive partial shade, coffee plants do great when planted under other tree, where they receive dappled sunlight. Keep your coffee plants soil moist but not over saturated, give your plant warm water once you feel that the top of the soil is starting to dry out. To fertilize the plant, give organic fertilizer and soil fertilizer around the plant. When its the time to harvest the fruits, usually the first harvest will not bear too much fruits, the productivity of coffee plants will increase at the age of 7-9 years. Intensive cultivated coffee plants can bear fruits at 2,5-3 years for Robusta and 3-4 years for Arabica.
The next step is processing the coffee, there are two methods in processing coffee. The first method is the dry method, the freshly picked cherries aare simply spread out on huge surfaces to dry in the sun. The second method, the wet method, the freshly harvested cherries are passed through a pulping machine to separate the skin and pulp from the bean. Then, the beans are separated by weights as they pass through water channels. After that, the beans are transported to large, water-filled fermentation banks, when the fermentation is completed, the bean feel rough to the touch.
After processing, the coffee will go through 3 steps of milling; hulling,polishing,sorting and grading. Hulling process will removes the parchment skin of wet processing coffee. Polishing will removes any silver skins that remains on the beans after hulling. The third and final step of milling is sorting and grading, this process will sorts the coffee by weight and size. The beans are also reviewed for color flaws and any imperfection. After that, the next step is roasting, roasting is used to transform green coffee into aromatic brown beans, most roasting machines maintain a temperature of about 550 degree farenheit.
The next process is to package and ship the coffee beans. Roughly, there are 3 types of coffee packaging. The first is Vacuum packed or airtight packaging, this type of packaging is used when the coffee beans have been roasted and there is place and time for the coffee beans to rest for a while. The second is packed in a paper bag, this type of packaging is usually used when the coffee beans have just been roasted and are sold to customers within a few days. The third is airtight pack with valve, its used when the coffee beans are roastedand have to be packed immediately for further transport. After packaging, the next step is shipping. To make sure your coffee beans are shipped properly without any damage , you need to make sure you pack the coffee beans correctly so the coffee beans won't spill anywhere. Second, Get insurance; protect yourself against damaged freight by getting third party freight insurance. Third, know the weight and dimensions of your coffee so you get the right class and the right place. Fourth, confirm the carrier will move the commodity, some carriers won't move coffee beans because of the smell, especially if you're moving a full truckload, so make sure properly that the carriers will move your coffee.
The final process is grinding, brewing and drinking. In the grinding process, there are 4 types of grinding tools that you can use, there are burr grinder, blade grinder, conical grinder and hand grinder. There are 4 results of grinding depending on your preference. The first is coarse grinds, this type of grind leaves the largest granules of coffee and is preferred for French Presses (a.k.a. plungers) or the percolator method of brewing. The second is medium grinds, medium grinds have a consistency of granulated sugar and are primarily recommended for vacuum and certain types of drip coffee makers. Because of its versatile size, it can also be used for other brewing methods, but not espresso. The third is fine grinds, also known as an espresso grind, this is a grind with a powdery/mealy consistency used in espresso makers and Neapolitan flip-drips though electric drip and filter brews can use it as well. The fourth is pulverized grind, Like fine flour, this extremely fine grind is the province of Turkish coffee and usually needs to be ground in a special grinder. For brewing, there are many ways to brew the coffee, different methods of brewing resulting in different types of coffee.
